De Novo Stories

The Journey Has Just Begun

Thomas came to us from Spiritual Services at Haven for Hope. Thomas and his wife and two boys have been at H4H since May, 2016. Thomas has had cerebral palsy since infancy and is confined to a motorized wheelchair.

In spite of his physical limitations, Thomas has acquired a full scholarship to Shriner University in Kerrville. He will major in music education with the hope of teaching middle school students. H4H is working to get Thomas employed and his wife is back to work. They want to move to Converse so their boys can continue in the same school as last year where they are both honor students.

Thomas plays the Euphonium and it will be his major instrument as he earns his degree in music education. However, prior to coming to Haven, he had pawned his instrument for rent money leaving him without an instrument. H4H requested that De Novo buy the Euphonium so that he could attend University. We were thrilled to do so. When ask if he would allow us to video him telling his story and then playing the instrument. He replied “Yes. And if you will bring a hymnal, I will play Amazing Grace!!”

Thomas is now working and his family is back in Converse. He is practicing four hours a day and will start school in September. No longer homeless but self-sufficient, Thomas and his family are contributing members of the San Antonio community.
